DM blackmailer sentenced - Seven years in prison

April 26, 2023 /

Despite a thin line of evidence, investigators spent months of painstaking work identifying the alleged perpetrator who blackmailed the drugstore dm in 2019 and detonated an explosive device in one of the stores. He has now been sentenced to seven years in prison by the Karlsruhe Regional Court for particularly serious extortion and causing an explosive device to explode. The verdict is not yet final.

Who is the dm blackmailer?

The 53-year-old, who was sentenced by Karlsruhe Regional Court, had been living in Switzerland until his arrest. During the trial, he confessed to the crime. According to his own testimony, the trained nurse was increasingly suffering from professional burnout, partly because he was worried about his financial security until retirement. Blackmailing the company seemed to be the only possible way out. The detonation of the explosive device in one of the branches was intended to underline the threat.

Investigating the perpetrator

In order to identify the perpetrator, the investigating authorities carried out very extensive work to trace the money. In collaboration with experts in cryptocurrencies, the money flows were traced, as the transfer of the €500,000 was made via Bitcoin. Thanks to decentralized management via a blockchain, every payment can be traced.

The breakthrough then came with the program Aktenzeichen XY, in which investigators go public to obtain further clues. In this case, the wig used by the perpetrator was recognized, with the tip that it could be purchased via Amazon. In the period in question before the crime, the wig was purchased by around 200 people, including the perpetrator.

The hearing at Karlsruhe Regional Court

The man, who has been in custody since July 2022, fully confessed in court. According to his statement, it was important to him that no one was harmed. In the judge’s opinion, a sentence from the blackmail letter shows a high level of criminal energy, with the threat of “getting off more than lightly with this warning shot” suggesting that people could be injured or even killed.

The public prosecutor demanded a nine-year prison sentence. As no one was injured, the defendant confessed and a large part of the €500,000 was recovered, the court did not impose this sentence. The defendant now has one week to lodge an appeal at the Federal Supreme Court in Karlsruhe, the public prosecutor’s office has waived this option.
